Modeling Kidney Function Lab
Model the action of a kidney for a striking visual demonstration. Students construct a model of a kidney using a semipermeable membrane to filter a completely safe solution simulating blood. The simulated blood solution contains simulated cells which can not cross the semipermeable membrane, remaining in the kidney model. The resulting
filtrate resembles urine, which students test for salt and other waste products. The simulated blood cells can also be seen and counted under a microscope - just like real blood! Students learn about the urinary system, urine formation and kidney function.
